“Ethics of Representation” – Workshops and Dialogues with Teaching Artists from be/longing HK

In November 2025, Morningside College partnered with be/longing HK to host a three-part Theatre and Storytelling Workshop Series, culminating in an interactive General Education discussion on creative dilemmas in the arts.

Led by teaching artists Miko (Bauhinia Black) and William Elvin Manzano, the workshops introduced students to playwriting, narrative construction, performance techniques, and the ethical considerations behind artistic decision-making. For many participants, this was their first experience writing or staging a scene—and their growth was remarkable. Students reflected on how the series pushed them to think more deeply about identity, representation, and the power of storytelling.

In the final talk, our guests shared real-world dilemmas they encountered as practitioners in Hong Kong’s creative industries. Students engaged in lively discussions linking these experiences to the ethical frameworks taught in the course, strengthening their ability to analyse media and reflect critically on the responsibilities artists carry in public life.

This collaboration enriched our General Education curriculum by giving students a rare opportunity to learn directly from working artists and to apply philosophical concepts through hands-on creative practice. We are grateful to be/longing HK for bringing their expertise, care, and community-driven approach to Morningside.
