Director Jun Li’s Visit
In January, Morningside alumnus Jun Li visited campus to give an interview about his award-winning film Drifting and speak with current students at the College about becoming a filmmaker.
Speaking with Morningside Fellow Kristof Van den Troost, Li discussed his experiences directing Drifting, which won Best Adapted Screenplay at the 2021 Golden Horse Awards. Set in Hong Kong’s Sham Shui Po, the film depicts a court case lodged by street-sleepers against the government for property loss.
In a conversation with students interested in film and writing, Li explored his career trajectory and the resources available to students who may want to pursue film-making.
Reflecting on Morningside as part of his university experience, Li discussed how he was able to “make friends from all around the world,” and “learn a lot about cultural and societal differences” from people he met at Morningside. In mentioning the College’s General Education course GEMC 1001—titled Current Dilemmas and their Histories—Li said that the course “encourage[e]d thinking and open discussion,” which “can help generate different perspectives.”
