Morningside Summer Service in Nepal

2014年61日

This past week, a group of sixteen Morningside students from diverse majors and backgrounds traveled to Nepal to perform service as part of Morningside’s Service Learning Course. The students camped in the Nepalese countryside in Dhading District as they learned about the challenges facing this unique and vibrant region; students visited the local schools and spoke to the teachers, observed a health clinic, visited a local farmhouse, and met with leaders from non-government organizations operating in Nepal, all the while contributing labor to the construction of two buildings which will be used for community activities. Though the students, with their urban backgrounds, were facing intense culture shock and the rigors and discomforts of camping, spirits remained high as the desire to experience a different way of life and think of creative solutions to pressing problems kept the group motivated. During their downtime, students interacted with locals, played frisbee and cricket with the village children, and even learned a few words of Nepali.

The trip received financial support from Morningside College and the University’s I•CARE program.
