Students Explore Hong Kong's Cultural Resources

20February2014

Throughout the academic year, Morningside students attend cultural shows and performances as part of the College's Exploring Hong Kong's Cultural Resources Programme.

Morningside's Exploring Hong Kong's Cultural Resources Programme encourages its students to attend cultural activities throughout the city, sponsored by the College. Throughout the academic year, students are invited to events ranging from plays to art exhibitions, concerts to literary talks. The goal of the programme is to encourage students to learn more about the cultural offerings available in Hong Kong, and to expose them to life outside of their academic studies.

During the Fall term, four students attended a Hong Kong Literary Festival talk featuring one of today's foremost Korean authors, and the first woman and first Korean to win a Man Asia Literary Prize, Kyung-Sook Shin. In an intimate café, surrounded by books, Shin discussed her award-winning novel, Please Look After Mom, and the state of Korean literature with linguist Kelly Falconer.

Later on in the term, another group of students attended the Hong Kong Philharmonic's Gershwin, Live! performance, during which a recording of Gershwin playing 'Rhapsody in Blue' at breakneck speed took center stage with accompaniment by the Philharmonic. The group was also treated to various musical numbers and even a fugue. It was quite the enchanting evening at the Cultural Centre!

Other events that Morningside students attended last semester include the play A Bowlful of Kindness, and the ballet The Dream of the Red Chamber. In the Spring, the quality cultural excursions continue with a visit to Fotanian Open Studios, and forthcoming trips to see Mies Julie, Highland Fling, and Gregory Porter, all part of the Hong Kong Arts Festival.
