Morningside College Fellow Professor Qi Dou Advances Medical AI Navigation Technology

20June2022

Morningside College Fellow Professor Qi Dou (second from the right), in collaboration with Professor Li Zhang from the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering, has advanced AI microrobot navigation technology inspired by the movement of swarming bees.

College Fellow Professor Dou, along with her group in CUHK’s Department of Computer Science and Engineering, applies the swarming movement to microrobots in hopes of using the technology in medical contexts, such as targeted drug delivery. Their AI system uses data from medical imaging technology to map out the best possible route for microrobots to reach its target desination. In the future, the team hopes that this technology will enable microrobots to autonomously change formation to successfully navigate past obstacles in the human body.

This project is funded by the Research Grants Council (RGC), the HKSAR Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC), the Chow Yuk Ho Technology Centre for Innovative Medicine, the CUHK T Stone Robotics Institute, the CUHK Shun Hing Institute of Advanced Engineering, the Multi-Scale Medical Robotics Center (MRC), InnoHK, at the Hong Kong Science Park, and the SIAT-CUHK Joint Laboratory of Robotics and Intelligent Systems.
