Music Night Returns
On Wednesday 16 November, students hosted their first music night in two years. Music nights had been a fixture of the college calendar in pre-pandemic years, but could not convene during semesters with pandemic restrictions.
The event was held during communal dinner, and six student bands performed. Students performed songs in more than five languages, and showcased their talents on the cello, drums, guitar, harmonica, keyboard, piano, ukulele, and violin. The event was brought back thanks to the enthusiasm and commitment of Lam Tsz Ho, Myles Ng, Samuel Yu, and Umoto Yu.
These four upperclassmen are also members of the 'MC Band' (est. 2017). Myles is from the Philippines, and music nights evoke memories of karaoke sessions and sing-alongs at home. He hopes that music has a similar effect of bringing together the Morningside community. Tsz Ho and Samuel similarly cherish the shared tradition, and enjoy 'matchmaking' individual musicians into student bands that bond over performances. Umoto recalls the low turnout for music nights during the pandemic, and is glad to have the full community back in attendance.
They shared how the exhilaration of performing overrode any nervousness or lack of practise, and were impressed by the range of musical culture and styles on show. Morningside's musical culture allowed them to hone skills practised since their childhoods, and they want to continue performing, individually and together, after their graduations.
Myles had a message for his fellow students: "Music is for anyone and everyone at Morningside. The best part about sharing music in a college community as intimate and supportive as Morningside is that everyone here supports you and wants to hear you play". Tsz Ho expressed his astonishment at the level of musical talent within the college, and will now take over as the Music Community Director.
